The message was not to put yourself down; quite the contrary. Instead, it's better to accept each event as it happens, take responsibility, and move on.

If you constantly blame others for your misfourtune, you don't have any incentive to improve yourself and pull yourself out of that situation. It's not about tearing yourself down, it's simply owning up to what's going on, and not letting anything distract you.

Just my quick two cents... sometimes, you gotta blame the other guy... I mean, if you keep putting yourself down by the end of the round you're going to want to kill yourself. :)
