45 minutes isn't that long, to be honest, for a forum that isn't as active as the other Doom forums, like ZDoom or Doomworld.

The upgrade is now complete. It seems all went well, and as a bonus, DRD Team now supports IPv6!

Yeah, when I ran Fedora I liked the operating system to death but upgrading it was a nightmare, it happened way too frequently and it was way too problematic. This doesn't make me a die-hard Ubuntu fan, but at least I can attest that Ubuntu is a lot easier to use for what I need it for.

My experience with Ubuntu upgrades is that they usually don't produce any problems (even the video card driver config migrated the last few times not that that's relevant to servers). Of course this doesn't prevent possible problems that will result from things like PHP version upgrades.

And even more importantly, as I've found out the hard way, if your release is unsupported for too long the upgrade path disappears. Since we're using the LTSs this wouldn't happen until April 2017, but just saying. (Support for 10.04 ends in 2015.)

All operating systems undergo release cycles and major changes, often which hopefully add new features. However, older versions stop getting supported, which is all and well but if you don't keep up with things it means that you will no longer get critical security updates and your system becomes vulnerable. That isn't the case yet with Ubuntu 10 LTS, but it's never a bad idea to stay ahead of the curve. ;)

That being said, the purpose of the downtime is ... well, to prevent more downtime in the future. :P Preventing the kind of downtime that could ... have bad consequences. >_< lol

I hope to minimize the downtime as much as possible and will try to have the services running for as long as possible, if possible, although some slow-downs will be expected.[/s]
