One last idea, search for a file dxdiag.exe and run the tests it provides.

I ran all the tests, and I didn't find any problems. Except on the sound tests it said:

Your sound card does not support hardware buffering. Sounds will only play back from software buffers.

Could this be the problem?

Assuming, that it is, then you should look at updating the soundcard drivers.

Just another thought, now that you know that your videocard is ok with Direct3D. Run ZDoom 98 and see how far it will go.

ZDoom freezes in the same manner at startup.

I updated the soundcard drivers and still no luck.

So, drivers are uptodate, startup messages look ok.

Without sitting in front of your computer, I am basically out of ideas and grasping the last straw here.
Since you mentioned that it ran fine after you installed into a clean directory, the only thing that was
added to the directory was the zdoom-computername.ini file. Delete that and try again.

Nope. I deleted it and it's still broken.

Wait a minute! I remember having a problem like this with jDoom. It worked once and then it busted. I was fiddled around with the settings and when I disabled FMOD and it worked. Is there a way to disable FMOD in GZDoom?

"gzdoom -nosound" I think. Dunno if it disables FMOD completely though.
