What programs are used to open/edit MD2 models?

Thanks, but I keep getting an error that says "found vertices with no bone" and the thing refuses to save.

Create a bone. Select all the vertices and attach them to a bone before saving (MilkShape sucks).

you may try GMAX it is free unlike milkshape, however there aren't many ( or any ? ) way to export correct MD2 , however GZDoom supports MD3 ,
you can find import/export plugins/scripts for it here

i have no idea where to get md2 exporter

Not directly no. What you do is install the development pack ID software commissioned for Quake3 - that lets you export as MD3 (obviously). Then if you need it in MD2 a simple convertor can be used.
