do you guys know why there's so many maps for Doom 2 and not Doom 1/Ultimate Doom?

Most likely because Doom2 is Doom1 + new stuff, like new gun, new monsters and such

More textures, flats, monsters and weapons available.

Maybe so, but the enviroment in Doom II is bigger, unlike most of the maps I've seen in [Ultimate] Doom.

The size of the environment really doesn't factor into things, given the map format.

Doom 2 is a better base to work from IMO. Then again with all of the changes we are capable of making, we could just do any doom game we wanted and still make whatever out of it.

I think there is a general assumption that everyone has Doom2. Of course, there will be some people who don't. I wonder how many people have either Doom1 or Doom2 but not both?

I had Doom 2 but not Doom 1 for a long time before I picked up DCE.

I had to pick up DCE in order to get Final Doom, many years after it was released

Er, Ultimate Doom = 36 maps. Doom2 = 32 maps.

Anyone in that situation cannot be considered a true Doom fan. I truly wouldn't bother about that minority. Besides, the few missing textures are easily added. All you'd need now is a source port that doesn't strictly separate between game modes.

Graf, why'd you post? Your own GZDoom is such a source-port.

There are others as well - ZDoom, Doomsday, Legacy (I think)...
