The latest versions can just be loaded with '-file' and should work without any further configuration. Of course hires textures need to be enabled in the menu.

pk3s are just zips that have been renamed. Personally, I wish people wouldn't do it because IMO it just causes confusion but I'm swimming against the current with that one. Anyway, you should be able to open it with Winzip (or any other zipping util). However, there is no need because GZdoom can load zips/pk3s without them being unzipped.
I'm not sure if you have the right file or not, but try dragging and dropping it onto the gzdoom executable (or load it from the command line:
gzdoom -file jdtp-20071114.pk3
and see what happens. If it's the right pack and you have enabled hi-res textures in the menu, you should have hi-res textures in the game. If not, you've probably got the wrong pack.

thanks enjay it worked in both methods you mentioned, i noticed some textures are missing are these being finished? and are any model textures made for gzdoom yet?

If that's the texture pack being headed up by KuriKai, then yes, It's actively being worked on with an intention of doing all textures. (Sorry, I just don't remember the file name so I'm not sure.) Hang on...
Yes, that's the pack.
As for models, a few people have made a start on converting existing JDoom models for GZdoom but I'm not sure how much progress has been made.

good because i tried jdoom with all the packs and it ran terrible, i got less then 30fps in parts, i know its not my system because its a top of the range beast, i guess it must have compatability problems, im sticking with gzdoom as it runs silky smooth even with the hires textures

Do you have Vista or XP? And which GFX card?
If Vista, it's a compatibility issue. The latest versions of Doomsday and Risen3D I tested worked extremely badly for me, too, and I had to change a few things in GZDoom as well in order to make it work well (my own fault though because I abused undefined behavior in the GL driver.)
