MD3 & MD2 Exporters for Maya?

I'm in the middle of deciding on a source port that will allow me to add my own 3d monsters/weapons/items into DOOM (looks like gzdoom is the one for me). After lazily researching the differences between md2 & md3 I've decided that I would much prefer md3 which is the main reason for going with gzdoom. The problem is that i can't find an md3 exporter for maya anywhere. I've searched every link on the first three pages and any others that looked promising of a google search but there was nothing. I've even searched some of the 3d game developing sites that I use frequently for work. Perhaps i'm looking for the wrong thing? I know that people are still using these but for some reason nobody seems to be handing them out anymore.

I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that someone here might know where I could get my hands on an md3 3xporter for maya. Probably one for maya 8.5 since that was the last maya that was supported by md5 exporters.

If you don't find one, you can save as an .obj file, open it in Blender, and export it from Blender. It'd be better to export directly from your favorite program, but if you gotta make do with what you have...

Do you know if animations can be preserved using that method? Some programs can import/export the base model to different formats but animation information can be lost in the process.

No. OBJ files do not keep animations. Does anyone here know anything about Milkshape? My search so far has lead me to Milkshape and it seems promising. People seem to have problems getting their maya animations over though.

(Edit: By the way, Milkshape natively supports md3)

Yes, I tend to use MilkShape (thanks to Nash giving me a heads-up about it). It supports a variety of formats. Again, however, importing models will often lose any animation information that you have built in to it. MilkShape does have some reasonable animation tools itself though.

The link I give was a free plugin for maya to export md3 format.

No post was deleted recently... :/

It may have been lost in the recent server shuffling, or maybe you had hit "preview" instead of "submit", or something. I don't know. But the logs do not show any deleted post in this thread.

Good to see you weighing in to this thread. Considering your extensive work with models for Doom, you are probably as well placed as anyone to speak about the relative merits of model support in source ports (especially Risen3D and DoomsDay, of course, if NiuHaka is perhaps giving them any consideration).

Actually I saw your response and downloaded it already. I might have even responded with a thank you or something. So far everything seems to be working. Thank you very much. Right now i'm preparing to test the results of the exporter. Thanks again.

The server had to be restored to an earlier state. This resulted in the loss of a few posts, but the loss was very minimal - at most, 8 or so hours of posts were lost.
