GZDoom = postage stamps.

JDoom = just blur...

Image
JDoom -Outlines = perfection.

Ugh, the -outlines one is the worst IMO.

If you ask me, all of those look awful. I prefer to play without any kind of crappy filters.

The current GZDoom filter makes sprites look totally out of place in the picture, as they weren't Doom's or something, outlines just give more definition.

IMO the black outlines make the sprites look out of place. As a matter of fact, it's my main beef with Edge. It's black outlines are so thick, it makes it look like someone tried to make a "Jet Set Doom" mod. And to make it worse, there's no way you can turn it off (unless you disable filtering all together).

However, as the saying goes, "different strokes for different folks", so if some people like it that way, and it's easy for Graf to put in (as an option, of course ;)), then I don't see why not.

I know the "just blur" picture you have there should be easy to add, as it was an option in ZDoomGL.

Black outlines are disabled by default in Jdoom ;)

I know about jDoom; I was talking about Edge though, where the effect is way more noticable.

Your perfection = my crap. The outlines are just awful so don't ever expect to see them.

The blur is better but having translucent parts in the sprites causes other problems.

The biggest problem with it is that I have to sort the sprites if I gave them translucent edges. That would cause performance issues especially when translucent geometry is involved. As it is now I can just draw them without wasting any thoughts on overlap issues.

From the 3 options shown, IMO, GZDoom looks the best and "Perfection" looks the worst.

I concur with Enjay on the best one but the worst IMO is the second one

Actually, yeah, looking at it again, the second is the worst.

The smaller the sprite is, the bigger the chances are that image quality worsens as a filter is applied. In terms of work, how much would it take (estimated) to get outlines working in GZDoom in case someone showed interest in them?.

On the third one, you can see part of a light through the top of the left zombie's head. That's why sharper is better. I think the issue is how technically demanding this could end up being. Not how much time it would take.

On the first one, you can see a zombie with knees partially melted together, that's why outlines are better.

But you won't get them! This is Doom, not a comic!
