Crouching with skins

Post by Cutmanmike »

If you crouch while wearing a skin you change into the doomguy crouching and it looks very odd. Could the stretching be added for skins without the crouching defined?

Which reminds me, how do you define a crouching sprite in S_Skin anyway?

I don't think skin support for crouching has been added yet.

It's in the most recent ZDoom source but not in the last official GZDoom release.

Okay, so how do you define one when it's in?

Oh and, what about my suggestion?

Just add 'crouchsprite=XXXX' to the skin definition lump.

Hmm in that case is there crouch hurt, pain, movement and shooting sprites too or not? (I hope not, more work for me otherwise)

Of course you have to provide all of them. Except for the death sequence everything has to be replaced. But since all use the same sprite name for the standing sprites the same applies to the crouching sprites.

And obviously, if you don't fancy making different sprites for all those states, just include duplicates for each one. It's a shame the death can't also be incorporated because, although it doesn't look too bad with the "base" skin, with some skins it will look like a crouched player suddenly jumps to his feet to die (possibly in a low room). However, as Graf explained elsewhere, it's for good technical reasons.

I think Enjay has already answered that.

Could have meant zdoom since you said it was in the most recent version of the ZDoom source

Is crouching deactivated as standard? Would make sense as it looks bad to have skins swap their sprites when you crouch

Crouching is on by default (but no key bound to it.) And if a skin doesn't have a crouch sprite the normal one will be shrunk to half its height. That doesn't look particularly good but is better than nothing.

Yes, ALOT better than switching to the marine.
