Milkshape3D. It's only 25 bucks and damn worth it. Plus, the MD3 exporter is awesome.
The only downside to it is that it can't model in quads, but it's not really much a problem to me. If I wanted to model in quads, I'll just use Anim8or (which is freeware), then export the mesh to a format Milkshape3D can read.
For UV mapping, I use LithUnwrap 1.3.

I agree 100% MilkShape is great for game modeling due to it's limited poly support. Ms3d also has one of the largest plugin listsNash wrote:Milkshape3D. It's only 25 bucks and damn worth it. Plus, the MD3 exporter is awesome.

I however use Ultimate Unwrap3D v2.28, at $45 very good UV maping tool IMHO.

Im using MS3D, right now, Im just "Getting my Legs" when it comes to modeling, I certainly prefer the low-poly approach of MS3D to anything else. I just need some basic tutorials or instruction or something to help me UV map a random model, because we all know Materials look like crap compared to a skin made by even a half decent photoshopper

as for UV maping i use Ultimate Unwrap3D v2.28. there is a demo version of it Here
the big thing about it that i like is it auto cuts a mesh, very acuratly i might add. here is a shot of my power suite mesh just loaded up

as you can see it cut the mesh for me

I don't even know what quads are so hell ok. I model in 3ds but I have a hard time unwarping in that. And I can't find a working md3 exporter either so hopefully milk has some 3ds importing shiz.Nash wrote:Milkshape3D. It's only 25 bucks and damn worth it. Plus, the MD3 exporter is awesome.

Modelling in quads is when you model with four-sided polygons instead of 3.
3DSMAX can model in quads.
Milkshape can't. You can only model with triangles.
Milkshape can import .3ds, but .3ds only supports triangles so your model will be triangulated anyway.
If you want a totally freeware modelling package, I suggest you get Blender and learn it. It may seem different at first, but once you know your way around it, it's awesome. Has an assload of features. It also has a great MD3 exporter (though it's user-written).

If you find you prefer 3DS Max you can get the MD2/MD3 import and export tool HereCutmanmike wrote:

That exporter looks like its for Max 3... I have the one for 6, 7, and I think it'll work with 8 I'm not quite sure on that last oneCyrez wrote:If you find you prefer 3DS Max you can get the MD2/MD3 import and export tool HereCutmanmike wrote:

Concerning all those unwrapping utils - meh. I'd say- do it yourself manually. Has anyone tried the tutorials at 3d total? The Joan of Arc (in "projects") explains not only modelling and rigging but uv mapping as well.
