Doom3 Skyboxes

Post by Enjay »

OK, these aren't all that special - in fact, I thought at least 1 was a little disappointing. Anyway, I poked around inside the Doom3 PK4 files and found 4 skyboxes. I re-orientated them to work with GZdoom but, aside from that, the graphics are unaltered (so yes, those artifacts and general crappiness in some areas are there in the originals).

Anyway, 4 skyboxes from Doom3, set up with test levels. Just load and look. Feel free to rip 'em if you want 'em. I don't *think* these have been ripped before.

Doom 3 had skyboxes. THe only thing I remember are the dark and redundant interiors of all the same looking areas.

Yeah, unfortunately, me too. However, I've been playing Classic Doom3 recently (with some tweaks of my own) and I am actually enjoying it. It doesn't quite have what Doom had, and it's certainly not what id should have produced but it is very true to the layout and a lot of the feel of Episode 1 and it is fun stuff. Very much so IMO, actually.

Some screenshots of me playing with my modifications (it actually looks even a little brighter in game - and bigger than 640x480 too).

I wish I could get Classic doom 3 to work with my version. I really don't feel like wasting time updating just to play a mod...

Compared to the mod, the update is pretty small. A 32MB download to fix a few bugs and enable a mod is OK by me when you put it in context of the mod you want to play being almost 200MB. :dunno:

Well, considering I'd have to re-install the original game, then go through te update, which is small, yes, and then I'd have to go and download the whole mod just to play through maps I already have with music I already downloaded. Seems like a big hassle for a little fun.

Might as well wait for KDiZD to come out. That prolly looks bgetter, anyway. :P

Well, that would be a much bigger DL right enough. However, that's exactly what I did. I didn't really want to put D3 back on my machine because I disliked it so much. However, I wanted to try ClassicDoom3 so I did the above and I'm happy that I did. I still don't like Doom3, I played a few levels and reconfirmed that, but I'm enjoying CDoom3.

These looks awesome. NOw I need to learn how Tormentor got his Sapphire skyboxes working.

As for Doom3. I was clearly disapointed with the game. I bought it the day it game out for 59 bucks when home and played it. The Hole time I swore i was playing Half Life with some graphical steroids. But it was still cool, over all. Even if I did play it with a lame Gforce 2 GFX card .

I didn't even bother to buy it. It's not a game but a demonstration (extremely well done and impressive) of the powerful new engine.
I NEVER heard someone having played it telling me that he enjoyed it...
Another bad game after Daïkatana... And after those more or less bad episodes of the Quake Series (the palm goes to Quake IV...)

That's pretty much what every ID game since Quake 1 has been, really. They're just taking the same ideas and letting Carmack write a new engine for them. (possible exception being Doom RPG, but I wouldn't know as I've never played it)

That's why the original Doom is still being played today, 13 years on. Gameplay. Will anybody be playing Doom3 in 2017? I wonder if ID had released Classic Doom 3 more people would have enjoyed it than D3? Haven't played it yet but looking at those screenshots it looks like a lot of fun.
