ADA, by Adolf "Gusta" Vojta - v 2.0 by Jive

Post by Jive »

ADA version 2.0 is released, HERE

Made with and for Gzdoom.
Here is a gift made by a newbie, like a tribute to thank Graf and Randy for their wonderful work, and the tons of hours of pleasure that I (had) have thanks to them.

Hey, it's simple, ok? Not a marvel like Sapphire by Tormentor.
But I think that it's a cool pwad.
At least, tons of hours are behind...

Enjoy, buddies, and please: if you like it, don't forget the name of its author: Adolf "Gusta" Vojta, a czech Tyson (as of 2003).

Played it. A bunch of old-style maps. Gameplay was nice, though visuals could be a bit better. Some of the maps, I believe, were featured in Kama Sutra (which Gusta was one of the authors, aye?).

I dunno what's the point of this so-called conversion for Gzdoom. No special effects were added to the maps (like 3d floors Gzdoom sports, or dynamic lighting) from what I recall. Only some new hi-res skies that kinda look out of the place with the maps. The music is also missing in the maps. Dunno if it was intentional or not.

I have to agree with Paul. The levels definitely have an old-school feeling that totally clashes with the newly added stuff. I'd rather play the unmodified version of it.

Jive if you want to show us gzdoom wad then make your own wad with 3d floors and dynamic lights! and i agree with paul because hi-res stuff just is not mixing with old-school stuff

Comments at GZD wrote:This v2.0 was not intended to be a new pwad, but an updated and debugged one (more informations in the html file).
I used a lot of high resolution pictures (mostly made or modified by me). Warning: it was not intended to be the best pwad with the best highres pictures. I have simply added and implemented new pictures and features to make it Gzdoom specific. I could have heavily modified it, adding Zdoom features here and there, but my main purpose was to debug it

Code: Select all

Notes: here are the notes given by me to my own work and the Gusta's one.
As you can see by yourself, I think that it won't remain in the memories for its particular brilliant value. Thus, I think that it's an average pwad for Gzdoom, and there is not a lot on the net...

- Architecture = 7/10
- Gameplay = 8/10
- Use of the Zdoom features = 6/10
- Pleasure to play = 7/10

- Note global = 7/10

This pwad was half made by me (at least, pretty all the 3D stuff was added by me...)

And it was NOT in my purpose to show you gzdoom wad.
You are all wrong, because none of you has read what I wrote...

When I see how hardly Daniel worked on his pwads, and how badly it was commented, at the point to disguss him to work anymore on Doom stuff and to leave its community, I will SURELY NOT do the same error myself, thus I could do it.
Paul wrote:The music is also missing in the maps. Dunno if it was intentional or not.
It was!!!
Gusta didn't make any new music for it, and there was no entry for musics. So, I have disabled it. It's quite horripilous to listen always the same musics, so well known since the so long time they are existing and listened.

hoh :D

Sorry Paul, but I disliked to be judged so quickly, for wrong reasons (wrong, because my purpose was elsewhere).

I listened attentively, and I tried to be honest with myself. I thought that the skies weren't as good as they could have been, so...
V 2.1 is online

I changed the skies for the second episode (one for e2m1-e2m6, and another one for e2m8, the sky for e2m7 is not changed), high-res pictures made by me for ADA. I made them simple (just clouds).
I didn't do it to please you, which would have been wrong, but to rectify a problem: the skies were pretty hugly, and they were affectively interfering with the general ambiance. But I made them in a hurry, shame on me...

Ok, I know that I CAN'T please everybody. But I don't want to do something wrong with the good work made by Gusta!!!

Peace! :D

On the following picture, you have an example of what I made:
- all textures aligned
- width of the structure changed, so that the textures are correctly displayed
- I have given a width for the walls on the sides (they were inexistant, and it was not pleasant)

My first reaction was to be pissed off (7 years reading such comments from time to time is a bit... too much).
Then, I thought correct to answer quickly:
- maybe because I am a dental surgeon, always making my best to solve problems, errors. Sometimes asked, sometimes decided by myself.
- surely because I love authors. I do what they would have do by themselves if they have had the powerfull tools used today.
- maybe because I love Doom :P
- surely because I want the best for the users coming on my sites
- maybe because I highly dislike to leave errors when I know perfectly how to correct them
- surely because I'm crazy

I NEVER release unauthorized wads (hello CyB).

End of my explanations.

No offense taken, I just find it funny when people explain themselves after their work is criticised. It's just me, no offense ;)

To be clear: I accept to be criticized, otherwise I will not post on a forum.
But I don't accept to be criticized for something else than what was my purpose.

My purpose was to embed and it's why I made new skies. Graf wrote that it was clashing with the old-school stuff, and he was right. I listened him, and I made 2 new skies.
So, I accept critics... when they are true, and when they are friendly given...

Graf: you will play the original pwad? Good luck, because... Hey, you will see it by yourself, and maybe you will understand better what I made, and why...
But I was honest enough to give you the link allowing you to have the original pwad. I could have hidden the existence of this site. But I give always everything about the authors: who they are, what they have made, and how to contact them... when it is possible.

Here is the original e2m4, like it was designed by Gusta:

And here are some of the bugs detected by your own engine... Bugs corrected by me, of course... :p

The only change I can see with the majority of the screenshots is a new skybox which doesn't make much of a difference in most of the levels anyway.

Jive you should do some big changed like making third episode! really because changing skybox doesn't change many things plus put music to it because there's zero atmosphere without music and no that's not bashing just
Suggestion ^_^

So, you should consult and buy (new) glasses...
Plus, if you have had read my html file, you would know that there is no skybox...

It is provocation for sure!!!
The most important part of my screenshots show that I made something else than just new skies:
the 2 first series are effectively about new skies, but what about the FIVE following ones? yes, they show also new skies, but it was not the most important change...

Ok, stop to argue with me using dumbass reasons, ok?
I won't answer anymore to this part, because the comments are stupid or out of purpose.
Period!

Music?!?
Pfff... I don't care, and the author didn't care himself, otherwise he would have put entries for music, right?
There was no new music, there is no music, period.

Atmosphere? Because you need music for such a purpose?!? Ok, ok, all tastes are in the nature, and it's legitim to ask for it. But I won't brake what was intended by Gusta while making entries randomly.
Music may change heavily the atmosphere. I will do it if and only if Gusta himself ask me to do it.
I tried several times to have a contact with him, but the est side don't care of the west side and they don't answer me.
EX@M, after some friendly first comments on icq, is now keeping the silence. I guess that they really don't matter to give us more than a wad, most of the time without any text file. Gusta made his own text file, and he wrote himsef:
- Music: No!

And now, do you have finally interesting comments?
NOBODY made it, for now... (of course, comments out of purpose are counted for zero).
The only one to write intelligently was Paul:
"Gameplay was nice, though visuals could be a bit better."
I could answer: it's exactly what I thought when I played the original pwad the first time. It's why I have rectified some of the most visible parts of the levels.

Lastly: I don't WANT to spend more time on it, because I have other wads to work on. Actually, I'm making changes to Epi-Hell, by Moe.

Hmmm?
...
The answer is: yes!
