Possible new splash WAD.

Post by Enjay »

OK, further to this thread:

http://forum.drdteam.org/viewtopic.php?t=1748

here's my take on a splash WAD to take advantage of the fact that GZdoom has now changed certain small actors to have a low enough mass to make the smaller splashes defined for terrains. As well as having an impact for splashes, this GZdoom feature is also very useful if you have made "sound splashes" to make footfall sounds for the various terrains - you can now make the small splash silent which avoids you hearing the sound of feet hitting the ground whenever you shoot the floor, or a shelf, or a windowsill etc. Anyway, that's irrelevant to this WAD. All it does is use the built in splash actors to create splashes for suitable default Doom terrains like the previous splash wads by Corwin/Pete Kempson.

This WAD different to splash 3 in a number of ways.

All splash sounds are randomly picked from a choice of 2. (ie, there is a little more variety in the sounds you hear.)

All sprites and predefined splash actors are fully used (no invisible sprites like before).

All splashes have large and small splashes defined.

The nukage splash no longer smokes - it uses green chunks (as originally intended) a personal choice.

Most sprites have be redone slightly for better (I hope) colouring and appearance.

Sprites have been offset in the WAD to a value I think looks fine with GZDoom sprite clipping and which should also look OK with Software ZDoom (but I haven't tested that).

Description of each splash:

Water: The large splash is quite large, using the normal Heretic water splash and secondary splash chunks. Both recoloured to match the Doom palette a bit more closely. The small splash uses the the central sprite with a sprite clipping value small enough to leave quite a bit of the splash visible (more than in Heretic)

Blood: A red version of the water splash with a more gloopy sound. The previous version was quite small, did not use the full sprite set and was so closely coloured to the blood flat that it was sometimes hard to see. I prefer this version. The secondary chunks do not fly as high as the water ones.

Nuke: The central splash is not as big as the water one. Based on the Heretic sludge sprite. Coloured to match the nukage flats more closely than splash3. The small splash only uses a small clip value as the splash sprite is not very tall anyway. Sound is a watery splash with a hint of hiss. The secondary chunks use the intended secondary chunks actor rather than the smoke seen in splash3.

Slime: A brown version of the nuke splash with a gloopy sound.

Lava: Basically the Heretic lava bright splash and smoke secondary chunk. Hopefully the colour is a reasonable match for the Doom lava. The original Heretic colour was not particularly close.

Hot: Uses the smoke from the lava splash and the small lava splash sound. The small version of this splash is just a clipped version of the big splash.

All terrains are defined to have a floorclip value of 10 (makes the doomguy sink about knee deep in the liquid) except the hot terrain which has a floorclip value of 0 as this is assumed to be a fairly hard rocky terrain that you shouldn't sink into.

All splashes have been given the NoAlert propery. This means that splashing around will not wake up monsters. You could argue this one back and forth if you like, but IMO monsters being alerted due to an essentially cosmetic enhancement changes gameplay too much.

Anyway, here it is. I'd like feedback: bugs, thoughts, comments, suggestions. I'll implement what I think should be and then release this to /idgames. I don't think there is a version of any of the splash wads on there. I'll give it a week or so to get feedback and then upload an "official" version.

Oh yeah, the test map has a plasma gun and a chaingun in it for a reason. The plasma gun makes a big splash, the chaingun makes a small one.

The WAD should be usable in Zdoom too - but you will only get the big splashes (as you did with previous splash WADs) until the mass change sees its way through to a Zdoom release too.

Added and used, also credited in my mod, if you don't mind. :)

Sure, use it for whatever you like. :D

I have just uploaded a minor fix though.

The water terrain wasn't fully defined (but it was working, so must have been inheriting something from somewhere).

The hot floors were using a splash actor that previously was intentionally invisible, but in the new version appeared as a slimy glob on the hot floors. Actor replaced with "None" for that splash definition.

Both the above are fixed.

Akk I need now is someone to release a sound mod for all terrains with different masses. it'd really add to the "realism"

Check out NeoDoom, that's pretty much got exactly that, but for a much wider base of flats and textures. If you jump on the skull floors, you even get a clink/crunch of bones.

Nice stuff, it's in my skins folder ;) Although I did modify it a bit, to add some translucency, and change the behaviour of the slime1-4 splash to be closer to the fwater splash, since that texture seems more 'watery' to me than 'sludgey' :P

OK, thanks for the feedback. I've had some more via PM too. Like I said, a week or so and I'll try and find a happy compromise between all the advice and upload the result.

It's also been suggested that my footfall/terrain WAD should be combined with this. What do people think? My feeling ATM is that I could perhaps release it to the archives too but I think doing it as 2 separate WADs is probably the way to go for people who want one but not the other?

Say Enjay......are you going to try to make it so there's actual footstep sounds instead of just footfal sounds?

anyway, this is cool, downloading now.

Can't be done with a simple, universal add on WAD of this type.

I think an all in one release, because that way the people who want one but not the other get the one they want, and a spare wad, whilst people who want both don't have to d/l to seperate files.

You mean the footfall one?

I think it is the file second from the bottom of this page
http://members.lycos.co.uk/enjay001/

Not sure if that's the newest/best version.

I never got around to finishing off the enhanced splash WAD that this thread was about BTW. In fact, I just found (and deleted) my working/temp files just the other week.
