On the 2nd page of the screen shots, Nash has a pic of a grate which you can see down into...

...how do I do this?

Also I REALLY like the lighting effects he's done on those screen shots too! I hope I get that good with lighting some day myself!

It'll either be a 3D floor or a portal. My guess is a 3D floor. Set up the floor as normal but use a texture with transparent areas in it for the floor.
