What's next?

Post by grubber »

So, it's decision time, all over again. Right now there are 3 possibilities:
  1. Dump everything, because keeping the site just because of 4 forum posts per day isn't worth the money.
    Problem: Death.
  2. Leave everything as it is. Upgrade to phpBB3 might be done. That will cost me money, as I'll have to pay for the hosting and the domain.
Problem: Where to get the money?
  3. Migrate to my company's hosting (Dreamhost). That way I'll have to pay only for the domain, which is fine.
Problem: It doesn't support multiple FTP accounts per user, so the hostees would be probably screwed.
Solution: Redo whole drdteam.org, including hosted sites. The CMS of choice would be Drupal (which would also bring some cool features to the site in future). The hostees would be able to create content & upload files through it's user interface.
State your opinion.

UPDATE:
SoulPriestess offered me a webspace and I took the offer. It means that everything will stay as is (at least for now), except that drdteam.org will be under his (her?) control (I'll still be around doing practically everything I do now). The move will commence in few weeks.

Comments are welcome.

I don't really visit here very often (off-chance of it ha[ppening really), but aside from GZDoom, the site doesn't hold a lot of interest for me. Now, I don't know how this works out for other people, but personally, I think the site is important for GZDoom unless Graf Zahl can find other hosting. Otherwise, it does seem rather dead to me.

A sad day, but a day that had to come.
It would be hypocrisy of me, if I said: "go on, keep the page alive!" I still drop by here from time to time, yet I do not post, currently I have little interest in Doom, however I do use my FTP on drdteam.org a lot, since it's a reliable server, and I've gotten used to it (praise the programmer! :) ).

Therefore, it's only fair I vote for closing the page, which would IMO be the easiest solution for Grubber.

And I hope, that somewhere in the future we could recreate this little community of ours.

I still need a site for my own stuff and I don't really care if it will be drdteam or something new. So it's either drdteam redesign or completely new site for me, each having its advantages and disadvantages (I don't want to wipe out everything here yet I want better CMS).

I've voted for Option C - even if we do end up losing a lot of stuff, a move to a better, more reliable host would be a godsend for me because the entire site keeps going down/otherwise becoming inaccessible during times when I need to use it.

Though in all honesty, Grubber, you've done me enough favors simply by keeping this site up and running, and it feels wrong of me to take it for granted and ask you to do more.

You don't think do you? GRUBBER WILL STILL HAVE TO PAY so DRDteam would be waste of money, he has his own life, he already devoted as much as he could to us... so let's just kill DRDteam and move elsewhere

The KDIZD site still gets almost 600 unique visitors per month. That's more than double the website of the company I work for. So there's definitely still some interest in its continuation.

As long as you control the domain and could set up the DNS to route accordingly, it could be moved elsewhere.

Of course, I will not ask you for your continued support without any return, so if you no longer wish to support the site, I'd understand that.

There is no reason for you to be attacking me.

And I've already said that I still need a site that I will pay for, but the question is whether it will be drdteam.org or something done from scratch (so I voted C).

You don't read, do you?
And you are getting far too emotional about it.

Hmm, I didn't realize that you are still interested in keeping it running, mr Programmer. That makes me come to a conclusion the option C would be better indeed. But I've originally voted A.

Although I don't really use this website much except for posting at Wildweasel's place, I vote option C.

I admit I've moved on from the DRDTeam forums to ZDoom's since all of my projects these days are done in G/ZDoom and are not strictly weapon mods, so having a larger community on hand is nice. However, the Armory and GZDoom forums are a valuable resource that I don't want to lose.

I voted C. It would require a lot of effort, but I think it's worth it.
