Using headsets while we play

Post by paladin »

Haven't played Doom in ... I dunno. 5 years? 7 years? It's been a long, long, long time.

I would like to play co-op Doom with two friends who have never played Doom (or any other FPS) before:

myself: home LAN on Windows XP
friend #1: home LAN on Linux
friend #2: internet on Windows XP

I chose GZDoom because the screenshots looked better than any other Doom port I saw. :-)

Friend #1 and I will be on the local home LAN. Friend #2 will be connected from his home. I'm pretty sure this can be done, but I just wanted to make sure.

But more importantly, I was wondering if it's possible to use headsets while we play so we can talk to each other in the game instead of using keyboard chat. If so, how would that sort of thing be accomplished? Would headset communication be done at the GZDoom level or by some other application?

Thanks!

For headset use, an external program would be the way to go - Ventrilo and Teamspeak are known for working with most games and having push-to-talk communication, though I tend to prefer Skype, as it's not necessary to hold down a key to speak and tends to be of higher voice quality without too much lag.
