That's just bad luck. I never had a problem with NVidia chipsets.

The only problems I ever had was with fans of Gainward cards. I had 2 of them (a GF 5900 and a GF 6600) and both cards' fans got mechanical problems within less than a year and started making some really ugly noise.

Logically I don't buy their cards anymore.

After that I bought an MSI GF 6800 which still works fine after 4 years and my current system's built-in GF 8600 also still works great after 2 years and 2 months.

As for driver updates: Probably a waste of time for ATI but NVidia really managed to achieve something last year. I got a performance increase of up to 50% depending on the material. The biggest boost was with GZDoom, ironically - in particular some of the more complex maps.

Your experience sounds similar to mine. nVidia have been very good for me and the only problem I have had was on a Gainward card (I think mine was also a GF5900) that also started making funny noises. Even the GF6200 in my other machine (the machine will be 7 years old in February and the card is a couple of years newer) still gives what I would class as acceptable performance.

Well, scratch that statement... spilling milk on your computer changes everything. :( Ugh!

Thank god, it was only the video card that was damaged. Everything else is still fine.

It depends on what the best one available is when I go to the store. If ATI is the better out of the selection, I will go with that.

If only i'd seen this topic earlier.

My laptop has a HD3650M, (just about a week before they started shipping them with the 4XXX series, same price :(), and in windows GZDoom behaves like it should.
It does't crash or anything.

In linux however it crashes the instant the monsters "wake up" and start moving about. When i use the freeze command it runs without any glitch.
It does spam loads of shader errors in linux though, didn't notice anything (or i'm blind to them) in windows.

I do have a French exam (bah, Frech, why do we have those courses in college :() in a couple of hours so i'll get a log after the exam.

You say you're in Belgium. Half of your country speaks French. Seems like a good reason to learn it. :P

*offtopic*
Does that matter? I though flemish/dutch was still optional in the other side of the country, whereas we're forced to learn french from grade school on.

edit: does the fact that my gzdoom svn rev on my laptop isn't quite up to date? It isn't that old though but i'll recompile it if you think it's too goddamn old.
I also forgot to mention that loading gzdoom w/o the light/brightmaps pk3 substantially reduces the amount of crashes.

Amazing, now that i want to show where it crashes it doesn't seem to want to crash. It has an "sticking key" problem, but i don't think gzdoom is the cause.
I'll test it with Alien Vendetta map26, that map seems to crash all the time if you move 1 inch.

Very strange as well : If i add logfile, it only crashes half of the times it does w/o the logfile flag. Is it just that unstable or is it me?
last edit (hopefully) : Don't note the nosound attribute, i didn't have OSS loaded at the time.
