Just a little warning for ATI users.

Advanced OpenGL source port fork from ZDoom, picking up where ZDoomGL left off.

Just a little warning for ATI users.

Post by Alter »

Apparently the new crappy 10.9 drivers for HD 4xxx cards hate gzdoom with passion because I can't even start it! This is not a bug report because as we know, ATI drivers are a headache for gzdoom (most of them) so for ATI users, consider this a warning. I do have a HD 4770 (Windows 7 64B drivers). 10.6 drivers worked fine with gzdoom minus some shader launch issues but they didn't break the port at all. I'll revert back today to 10.6 drivers and see if gzdoom works on those again, if they do, i'll confirm it here.

ATI drivers = headache. And nope, I can't blame graf since he isn't the one coding the crappy drivers but rather blame the ATI "engineers" who write them!

If anyone even thinks of replying to this statement and turn this topic into a Graf vs ATI or nVidia vs ATI topic, it'll be locked immediately. Take it to another topic.

What in hell are these idiots doing?

I can understand when it happens once (Bugs happen after all) - but this is the third time they managed to break their driver...

Out of curiosity, what precisely happens?

It crashes with a report (when loaded fully) that starts with this:

Code: C0000005 (Access Violation - tried to read address 0000012C)
Address: 71684731
Flags: 00000000

I'm using the latest official gzdoom to make things easier. So yeah this is definitely a driver issue as before switching to 10.9 from 10.6 I didn't have this. For laughs i'm gonna provide those reports here (for graf).

Does anyone know if Catalyst 10.8 works? It may be the version where that issue was introduced. 10.6 and 10.7 have been reported to work correctly.

I'm not sure because i'm reinstalling back to 10.6 later since it was stable. Anyway I have an idea, how about we should start making a list which drivers (starting 10.6) work with gzdoom or don't, for ATI users of course. That would significantly help ATI users (like me). If such thread ever happens, it should be an another sticky.

Good news! 10.10 drivers do work with gzdoom (I installed those for kicks instead of 10.6 again) and as we speak, i'm testing Saturnus (my gzdoom mod) again :). They came out 3 days ago by the way.

:D I guess they are wisely making sure their drivers run well for the 'right' platform. In return, D3D is always tuned for sub-optimal performance, as an encouragement for end-users to go out and buy the newest fastest hardware. Something like that, "eine Hand wäscht die andere".It's hard to believe a company as big as ati can't get their drivers right all the time.

Is there any of the big names besides id-soft still developing for open gl?

Not even id is using it anymore, I believe.

Frankly, OpenGL has degenerated into a disorganized mess over the years. Features have changed dramatically and D3D has adjusted its API to follow suit but GL is still stuck with the same procedural approach that didn't work well 10 years ago. Needless to say it doesn't work better now. I somehow understand why it's so hard to write good drivers for it.

But still, NVidia's GL drivers are much, much better with far less driver overhead and less bugs. I find it pathetic that my 3 year old GP8600 easily outperforms a Radeon HD5800 in GZDoom only because all the added performance of that card is lost in the GL API calls which are a lot slower on ATI.

On modern systems GZDoom is nearly completely GPU bound so driver efficiency is a major factor here.

Now I am scared considering that my new system with a HD6870 arrives in just 1 week... :( Any things I should take care of?
