What utilities do you use?

Post by ellmo »

Well, we have a topic about our desktops, that - believe it or not - say a lot about ourselves. We can see who likes to have more spare place on the desktop, and pays a to of attention to where the particlar icons are; and who likes to have eveyrthing within double-click range...
...but what's also interesting is what programs (utilities) do you use for various daily tasks such as wathcing videos, listening to music, browsing the net, reading e-mails, creating documents, uploading files to FTP, maintaining archives, burning CDs... and lot's of others...

Here's what I can think about for now:
Browser: Opera 8.0 (9.0 includes Bit Torrent which sucks badly)
e-mail: Thunderbird
FTP / copying / moving files: Total Commander
Bit torrent: Bit Comet (it's is written in C++ unlike java-based Azureus, which can considerably eat up your processor/RAM when working for a long periods)
Peer To Peer: eMule
Music / Video: Zoom Player (with CCCP - Combined community Codec Pack)
DVD: ASUSDVD (delivered with my laptop, it roxors boxors)
Video Capture: Fraps (doooh!)
Video / Audio compression, cutting and merging: Sony Vegas Studio 6.0
Graphic editor: Paint Shop Pro X
CD / DVD burning: Ashampoo 5 / Nero Burning Rom
Integrated development environment or IDE: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (MVS 8, in short)
*messenger: miranda IM
*IRC: Opera build-in IRC client

and now comes the maintenance part:
anti Virus: dr. Web
Registry maintenance: Registry Mechanic (totally awesome)
adware / spybot removal: Spybot Search & Destroy / Ad-Aware personal
defragmentation: Diskeeper Lite

EDIT: added messenger and IRC utils.

Ashampoo is much more reliable, easy to use and I could even say - faster - than Nero Burning Rom. I have Ashampoo 5 which is an old, abandonwared version I was given free with a PC magazine.
Never fooked up a CD / DVD for me, while Nero killed a lot.

I'm really impressed you can understand that shitload of information that is held there. But there is an enormous portion of obsolete entries even in fresh Windows installation, that just don't really need to be there.
I too never liked programs, which would play with my registry, but Mechanic kickss some major butt. As I run it the first time it killed more than 700 problems, and to my knowledge about 400-500 are in windows since installation.
