ATI Driver update or...

Post by Project Dark Fox »

I'm posting this crash report HERE instead of in bugs because the latest Driver update for my ATI Radeon HD 5750 video card seems to have messed up any way of properly running GZDoom. Now, I have no idea if Graf can even do anything about it, but I figured I should post about it anyway.

Other games such as Command and Conquer 3 and EVE Online seem to work properly, though. :/

I don't even get into the game, it just kills itself right when it's ready to play the game.

'Other games' use D3D, not OpenGL. Yes, you are not the first one experiencing this crash. It's inside ATI's OpenGL driver at a point where I haven't done anything yet.

Roger that. Should I back-date or keep my drivers as-is, then?

Other people have reported that a driver "downgrade" has fixed the issue for them and I'm sure that I remember reading someone saying that a specific DLL from the old driver could be copied to the GZdoom directory to circumvent the problem too (though I can't find the info ATM). However, if the old driver gave you no problems, this one is clearly broken and a "downgrade" sounds like a sensible move to me. It may well affect other programs too. I think someone else mentioned Doom3.

It'll affect any OpenGL program, actually. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_OpenGL_programs

Here's the thread Enjay was talking about: http://forum.drdteam.org/viewtopic.php?t=4820
kobliha wrote:I found a simple solution (until ATI fixes the problem which could take ages) - get atioglxx.dll file from older Catalyst driver suite and put it directly in GZDoom directory. Tested with atioglxx.dll taken from 9.10 driver version. GZDoom now works correctly again :-)

(Looks like the current ATI OpenGL driver doesn't work with GZDoom since they updated it to support OpenGL 3.2)

ATI Driver 10.3 just got released today and now GZDoom works for me now. I had been using 10.2 and GZDoom would not start up. I have an ASUS Radeon 4870HD.

Finally...

I'm not even using an ATI at the moment, though, cause the card finally crapped.

Ok, would anyone be interested in running my old benchmark again with this new driver? I heard some rumors about performance improvements and would like to see if it's true.

10.2 and 10.3 are the same for me, Gzdoom crashes with a very fatal error 10.1 and earlier works fine.

Your posts would be a lot more helpful if you posted your hardware specs...

I might spoken to soon about 10.3. It works fine when launching GZdoom with Doom2 but when launching it with my own map it still crashes. This does not happen with older drivers.

Specs are:

CPU: INTEL i7 920
GFX: ATI HD5850
MOBO: ASUS P6T SE
RAM: OCZ 6GB

I ran an burnintest and memtest to see if it was hardware related but nothing popped up.

What happens you see the heretic start-up screen and when it switches to a higher resolution i get the fatal error.

What if you play Heretic without your custom map? What if you load your map while using the -nostartup command line parameter?

If GZDoom/Heretic doesn't crash without your map, you might want to upload it on http://files.drdteam.org/ or attach it if it's small enough.

It works fine.

Still crashes.

Now i tried to load my map via a shortcut to GZDoom with

Code: Select all

D:\Games\Doom\GZdoom\gzdoom.exe -iwad "D:\Games\Doom\Wads\HERETIC.WAD" -skill "4" -file "D:\Games\Doom\Wads\Project_Heretic\brg_h1_res.pk3" "D:\Games\Doom\Wads\Project_Heretic\pk3\maps\map02.wad" +map MAP02
it works!

When I use the same line to launch my map via DB2 GZDoom crashes. :| Now I am confused.

Okay, so it only crashes if you start it from DB2. What are the resources files for the map? Make sure that if you've loaded gzdoom.pk3 or heretic.wad as resource files, you've checked the box that tells DB2 not to add them to the command line, since they're automatically loaded anyway.

Create a logfile (see here for help if needed), run the level from DB2, and after the crash copy/paste the content of the log file created.
Locked

Return to “GZDoom”
