Some skyboxes
If anyone wants to use these, go ahead. I was just poking through a few games to see what I could see, and I decided to rip some of the skyboxes I found there. I've done a few from Quake2 and Half life, but everyone has those games and the textures have been ripped many times over. Unreal, however, hasn't been ripped quite so often. Not by the doom community anyway. So, I didn't bother including the Quake or Half life ones. These all come from either Unreal2 or Unreal Tournament 2003.
I warn you now, these are all quite low-res, despite some of the original graphics being huge. There are some reasons for this:
I didn't want to create a huge download.
I thought 256x256 graphics looked reasonable in Doom
UnrealEd and my machine don't get on. Everytime I try and export a graphic it crashes so most of these were done by screen grabbing in the editor.
OK, so they're not ideal, but they are better than a single tiling 256x128 picture in the Doom palette. I tried to pick skies that I thought could be useful in Doom. I put them in the WAD as PNG files. JPGs would have made the WAS considerably smaller but these skies almost all produced noticeable jpeg artifacts and detracted from the quality of the skies.
Anyway, 15 skyboxes for you to try. All set up with demo maps, gldefs, and hirestex lumps. Just load into GZdoom and have a look. Like I said, if anyone finds anything useful, please go ahead and use them.

Yay a birthday present from Enjay.
Anyway I have a few hires versions of the skyboxes in there. I can link to them if you like.
Elec Fields
2 Ice ones
The Skybox in DM-DE-IRONIC
I can get more I just need to know which packages to rip from. If you have the utx files from unreal 2 I can rip hires versions as well.

I had a look through and didn't see anything that would easily convert to a 6 sided box. Sky textures, planets and so on were all there, but not a proper box from what I could see.wildweasel wrote:Sure, pretty much any good space skybox would be welcomed. I could have sworn UT's was just textures, but I guess I was wrong.

The Hell themed skybox is definitely an unreal one. Can't remember if it was Unreal 2003 or Unreal2 though. I've uninstalled both, so I can't quickly check.
There were actually 2 versions of it - the bright one that I included and a duller one. Perhaps they are supposed to animate or crossfade or something. However, I'd messed up the screen grab for one of the duller pics and had already uninstalled the game.
