[Idea] "Fantastic Worlds"

Post by Tormentor667 »

Original Thread at Doomworld.com
Yet another WAD idea? Well, just some brainstorming right now and the chance to see what others are thinking about this.

Some weeks ago, Paul Corfiatis started with a new 32 Map Megaward, based on DOOM2.EXE/DOOM2.WAD, no additional stuff, just plain straight vanilla. A discussion arose about what makes up for a good wad and the sense about all this projects that are based on simple ports and standard IWADs.

Though there have been some doomers shared my opinion when they said, something new, and never seen before makes up for a real great map, with replay value and all that stuff (this is also part of my next 2.5D Mapping Article). And c'mon, they are absolutely right, just think about Cyb's VOID or Russel_P's NULLSPACE!

What I'd like to do is leading yet another MEGAWAD with as many maps possible, but each of the maps must be unique, they must be special with a location or setting that hasn't seen before in any wad... think about floating buildings in the void, think about a medieval castle in space, think about an organic planet surface and UAC structures (like in Unreal 2), you can even think about something totally different, something that doesn't make any sense, it just should look different, new and... it should be interesting to recreate that idea with the Doom engine :)

The base of this would be ZDoom.99/GZDoom1.0.03, so your map can also be based on Boom and vanilla Doom2 but I would recommend ZDoom. New monsters and new weapons would be allowed as new textures, flats, sounds and music would be. But before we start, we should create a good package of resources with lots of textures that fit together...

Just let me know what you guys think about this, brainstorm with me about your ideas and let's see if such a project would make sense :)
If possible, reply at Doomworld (main discussion) please, makes it easier for me!

First let me apologise for not responding at DW, but here, but there's a shitload of text and not that I'm a real ignorant, but I'm simply occupied with other things to read that lot, whereas 75% appears to be an argument over Gzdoom/Zdoom, and personal opinions on that completely don't interest me.
Hmm.. as much as this sounds promising I had a couple of toughts on this that weren't exactly the most optimistic things from the hat but..

Allright. In my opinion, this is just another idea like the universe of those floating around. Unless you have a good team Torm this can be as much of a dream as anything else, however, knowing you're an intelligent person, have considered that. My point is that perhaps either tossing the idea into the void maybe it would be wiser to actually start a frozen volcano or a meteor that crashed into a galeon, bringing an alien race aboard ( ;) ) and showing some content to catch interest? One of the things I've discovered over the .. years(? .. damn I spend too much time with this) is that projects spawne from an idea "let's all join hands and make a project" seldom bring resutls, but those spawned even a tiniest resource "hey guys, I made a monster, how about we make some maps to fight with him?" tend to spawn fruits more often. Just a tought. What I want to say? Get out, come back with a screenshot of a map, reapply ;)

The idea itself is quite catchy but I must say Zdoom (Doom for that matter) isn't the best engine to choose. To create a conceptually and visually interesting world one would require a true 3d engine. Quake would be a good choice, but in my opinion, there's not much innovation to be done with Doom that screams out loud. I do believe I may be taken as a Heretic for saying that, but it's ofcourse a non-mattering personal opinion ;)
Also, knowing the past disables me to forget about KDiZD. Just a tought for you Tormentor, several people are indeed waiting for that thing to be released-maybe it's a good idea to finish that first before moving onto something new?

Seing as my post is nothing really valuable I can only wish you good luck Torm :)

I think it's a good idea, but you can't start a project with the intent of it being one of the 'greats' in terms of innovation and being unique. When Cyb started Void, he probably didn't think "I'll make an awesome and unique map". He most likely saw some things he liked in the game he got insperation from, and tried out some things in a doom map and went from there until he finished (then again, no way to find out his intention except from his own words).

Personally, I'd help out, except I don't even have the desire to work on my own project (which I hold dear). Non-generic themed doom maps are my kind of thing, and I always like to see more even though they are rare occurances. Getting a whole team together will be difficult, then having them follow through.

Anyway, good luck. I hope it does get started, and completed. Unique styled maps are always welcome on my hard-drive. :)
