What about DoomBuilder 2?

Post by Gez »

What is needed to successfully compile DB2?

1. Download source. This is achieved by using TortoiseSVN to checkout https://doombuilder.svn.sourceforge.net ... lder/trunk

2. Download MS Visual C# 2005 Express. Alternatively, you can download the 2008 version, but that one requires an annoying registration to keep working so 2005 is better.

3. Download and install SlimDX.

Apparently, that's all that's needed to then build DB2 in VC# 2005.

That's great. So you can also maintain the svn service of DB2. Awesome!

I wanted to download the source with TortoiseSVN bit i was unable to find the right link to the SVN service.

to download it via TortoiseSVN you have to use this link for downloading all the files in the Trunk folder :

Code: Select all

https://doombuilder.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/doombuilder/trunk/

i successfuly build it, but seems to be comming out to have a few errors in it.
I get a crash after i want to enter some of the options and this 3D Mode thingo keeps crashing.
It's better to wait for it's Official Release Announcement from Pascal(CodeImp).

I've run a debug mode from the most recent SVN, and i got the same problems, precisely when going into Preferences. It just crashes. Probably there's something wrong that Pascal has to fix.

On the other side i noticed that they are only with 2 Developers.
So, i think it might take a lot of days to get Doom Builder finished, because CodeImp has also 2 other projects to work on.
(HellBent and Bloodmasters)
It's still a mistery for everyone when this program will be released.
Also i think that the SVN on CodeImp's Sourceforge space is out of date.
Because as you saw the Teaser Preview on youtube.com it worked all fine with 3D mode and he can Rotate his made Sectors.
So probably he isn't done with the next SVN release yet.
Heh, it's hard to develop programs and games.
Aspecially in C++.

Actually my build has this function, that is the sector rotation, as seen in the youtube video. :?

As for the 3D mode, i gotta try in some sort of complex map to see if it works fine.

EDIT: oh, and the last svn log said that he is working on the visual mode, so most probably we will get a more stable and good looking 3d mode. :)

i hope so, because i fell i love in most of the new features in Doom builder 2 :D
hopefully no more annoying run-time errors! o.o
It's annoying to get this error when you are working on your map and forgot to save it randomly.
Which will force you to start all over.

He's no longer working on Hellbent, that project is abandoned.
The SVN isn't out of date at all! Why, if you look at the log, you'll see it just had an update today!
The teaser preview, on the other hand, really is very out of date now.
And he's not developing it in C++ but in C#.

I've tried to open my stronghold map in DB2, and 3d mode looks awful.
It doesn't manage to render every part of a bigger map, and as always textures stretch out. So i guess it will need a lot of work.

When DoomBuilder 2 gets to be a little more stable (and usable), I'll try and push for its addition here. Even though by general acceptance, SVN builds are not supposed to be 100% stable, I'd rather not add something that's going to do nothing more than cause grief to the average user who may not know how to work around program flaws and other issues. I am fairly certain that people who can work around these pretty well will, for the most part, be able to compile DB2 themselves anyway, barring certain issues.

Yes, I was going to suggest that WolfyGirl might like to put her builds online but, like you, I think the program needs to be a bit closer to completion and stability before that happens.

I'm willing to offer for the compiling of SVN builds of DB2, when it gets more stable. :)

The latest SVN update as of now is r565.
