Can't run fullscreen?

Advanced OpenGL source port fork from ZDoom, picking up where ZDoomGL left off.

Can't run fullscreen?

Post by Risen »

I recently switched graphics cards. I now have a GeForce 6200. Everything runs great, Except GZDoom, full screen, in OpenGL mode.

It runs fine in windowed OpenGL.
It runs fine in fullscreen software mode.
I tried a few other applications in fullscreen OpenGL (Quake 2, BREED, Doom Builder) and they worked fine, too.

Is my configuration wrong somehow (how?), or is there an incompatability here?

Try changing your full screen resolution? Could be a problem with your monitor not supporting a certain resolution.

For example, GZDoom doesn't run fullscreen OpenGL in 640x480 for me. o_O 640x400 is fine, so are any other resolutions. Weird, eh?

Whoops. I got distracted while writing that and forgot some important information.

I've tried multiple resolutions; 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768.

There is no crash, the screen just goes black and eventually shuts off until I toggle back to a windowed mode.

My monitor is fairly old, and when the refresh goes out of range it usually blinks the LEDs on the front. It doesn't do that here, it seems to just shut it off (goes into powersave mode).

Did you uninstall the previous drivers of the prior video card first? (Even if it was an older NVidia card before using this one, you should have done it just in case.)

Also, you should try to set GZDoom's resolution to the current desktop's resolution when using a fullscreen mode...

I'm betting my money that the problem's coming from your old monitor.

Yes, there is no crash - same with my case. The sound and music is running and all. It just goes blank for a while, then a graphic appears on the monitor saying "Sync out of range". If I Alt + F4, I can get out of the situation.

GZDoom doesnt run fullscreen for me. But since I use the ini file to change most settings (everything but the controls) and I play in windowed mode in every other port I didnt ever think about it.

Is the fullscreen mode looking like a bunch of messed up blocks to you?

Try to set the CVAR gl_vid_refreshhz to 60. Some old monitors report incorrect information via Plug&Play and then the game is unable to select the correct refresh rate on its own.

Perfect; that did it.

I thought it might have something to do with refresh rate, but didn't know how to force GZDoom to anything specific.

Thanks for the help!

You may want to try settings of 70, 72 or 75, now that it works. Higher frame rates are always better so it's worth at least a try.
I can't stand 60 at all so I have locked the frame rate inside the driver to the maximum possible for each resolution. That means no more trouble by applications that insist on 60 Hz.

I can't stand 60Hz either, so I understand your decision entirely! I'm already planning on trying higher values when I have a chance.

I figured you might be choosing the refresh rate this way. The problem is that I don't think my monitors (I have two of them) report their supported resolutions/refresh at all, so I have to set Windows up to allow everything and let me choose things manually. The back of the monitors have 5-BNC connectors! I have a couple of cables to convert the VGA signal. Sure they're old, but I have no reason to replace them since they're good sized and still produce good consistent color.

I had exactly the same problem. Thanks for the tip.
